Dollars & Details:

The next big thing in wireless Internet service is 5G (“Fifth Generation”) technology.  The concept is expected to produce blinding download speeds of one gigabyte per second (Gbps), and perhaps as high as 10 Gbps.  Demand is rising for instantaneous connectivity, calling for latency (meaning response time) of less than a few milliseconds, compared to today’s 50 milliseconds.  This technology will eventually change your entire wireless experience, with near-instant downloads of cloud-based data, and incredibly fast access to movies, TV and video.

2 billion new cellphones are sold around the world each year.  Most of them are smartphones. Smartphones will continue to morph into ever more complex, multi-purpose personal communication devices thanks to the availability of apps of all types.  Smartphone circuitry will become much more powerful, piggybacking off the revolution in ultra-fast, multi-processor power in handheld game machines.  Chips will become more energy efficient.

Trends and Theories:

South Korea’s mobile carriers, manufacturers and the South Korean government are working together to spend $1.57 billion to make 5G technology commercially available as early as 2020.  The EU and South Korea agreed to cooperate to develop systems, establish standards and acquire radio frequencies necessary to implement 5G networks.  The partnership will be led by Europe’s 5G PPP and South Korea’s 5G Forum.  KT Corp (in partnership with Samsung Electronics) reached data transmission speeds of 7.5 Gbps in a test in early 2015.  The firm announced plans to launch 5G during the Winter Olympics in South Korea in 2018.  Meanwhile, China’s Huawei Technologies plans to invest $600 million through 2018 on 5G.

Ranks and Results:

Smartphones now rule the wireless world, selling billions of new units yearly.  There are now more wireless subscription accounts worldwide than there are people on Earth, as some consumers have more than one account.

Dollars & Details:

Online merchandise, entertainment ticket and travel sales will be over $400 billion in the US, and $2 trillion worldwide during 2017.  Ecommerce will continue to leap ahead, as consumers become accustomed to buying merchandise online that they were previously intent on purchasing only in stores.  This includes online growth in food sales, such as everyday groceries and ready-to-cook meal packages.

Amazon.com, was growing at a 25%+ rate during 2016, with total revenues in the $130 billion range.  That’s nearly two and one-half times its revenues of 2011!  While Wal-Mart remains the world’s largest retailer ($486 billion in sales), it isn’t hard to imagine Amazon eventually surpassing Wal-Mart in the future.  Consumer and technology trends are in Amazon’s favor, and the entire world is Amazon’s market.

Trends and Theories:

Traditional retailing is under attack worldwide by the convenience and everyday low prices offered by ecommerce.  In the U.S., ecommerce grew by about 11% during the Christmas 2016 season alone—this type of growth makes traditional retailers green with envy.  Shopping via smartphone is soaring.  Many retail store chains are justifiably terrified of the future. Amazon is expecting such dramatic growth in the U.S. that it recently announced plans to hire 100,000 additional America employees.

All the information you need about the global ecommerce business can be found at Plunkett Research, including our ecommerce research center online, and our just-published, completely-updated Plunkett’s E-Commerce & Internet Business Almanac, 2017 edition.

Dollars & Details:

Globally, retailing is one of the world’s largest employers, including 16 million workers in the U.S. alone.  Official retail numbers can be confusing, however, because the official government count ($5.5 trillion revenues in the U.S. alone) includes car and gasoline sales.  A better indicator is the GAFO category (general merchandise, apparel, furniture and miscellaneous stores) at $1.3 trillion yearly, and food/beverage stores at $700 billion (U.S. numbers).

Trends and Theories:

Retailing is under attack by the convenience and everyday low prices offered by ecommerce.  Mall traffic is down and department stores are closing locations, while consumers click to buy from home.  This trend is irreversible, and the retail chains of the future will be smaller than today, both in store size and in total store count.

Ranks and Results:

Top Retailers:  (estimated fiscal 2016 sales, billions of $US)

Wal-Mart                      $482 bil

CVS                             $160 bil

Costco                         $119 bil.

Kroger                         $110 bil.

Walgreens Boots         $117 bil.

Carrefour                     $85 bil.

Home Depot                $88 bil.

Tesco                          $67 bil.

ALDO Group                $74 bil.

Target                          $74 bil.

AEON Co                     $74 bil.

While Wal-Mart is the world’s largest retailer by far, its revenues are under pressure, falling by $3 billion during 2016.  (Wal-Mart is about 3 ½ times larger than online giant Amazon.com.)  Wal-Mart’s key strategies include everyday low prices and massive, high-quality grocery departments that boost traffic.  Weekly store visits total 260 million shoppers, served by 2.3 million employees.  Meanwhile, Wal-Mart is investing intensely in increasing its own online sales, including its acquisition of Amazon competitor jet.com.
