Globally, as of 2014, there were more than 6.8 billion wireless device subscriptions in a world of 7 billion people, and more than 2.75 billion people worldwide were Internet users.

The base of people around the world who adopt smartphones will continue to grow, and they will use them to access the Internet, games and mobile apps in accelerating numbers. Games, social media and smart phones are extremely important in this evolving personal communications and media world and the lines between these three sectors are frequently obscure. For example, multiplayer online games encourage communication between communities of players, while social media like Facebook are often the platforms that support the most popular games. Meanwhile, apps are rapidly becoming the tool of choice for launching a wide variety of communications and entertainment tools and Internet sites, including games.

By early 2014, Facebook had more than 1.2 billion registered users (the majority are on mobile devices), and LinkedIn counted more than 300 million registered members. Twitter is exceptionally active, with more than 500 million tweets sent daily; 78% of its users are on mobile devices.

Emirates Airline, based in Dubai, UAE, has doubled its sales over the past five years, hitting about $20 billion in 2013.

This makes Emirates, a relatively new company, about one-half the size of United Airlines, but United’s growth has been fueled recently by the acquisition of Continental, not by the aggressive expansion practiced by these Middle Eastern firms. This stunning growth, which is stealing market share from the other long-haul, international airlines, is the result of carefully orchestrated, massive investment over a relatively short period of time. Emirates’ reach now extends to 132 cities in 77 nations on six continents. Competitor Etihad Airways, also based in the UAE and already at $5 billion in revenues, has similar expansion goals.

What’s going on here? How did a nation of only 170,000 citizens become a world power in airlines? In a bold and ambitious gamble, backed with billions of dollars, the government of Dubai took advantage of the fact that jet airlines based in Dubai can reach two thirds of the world’s population in eight hours of flight time or less. If you look at a world map, it’s easy to see that the UAE makes a perfect hub for linking passengers from Europe to Africa, India and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region—the parts of the world that are growing fastest in terms of air passenger travel and air freight.

Dubai: the world’s busiest international air hub

At the beginning of this century, Dubai ranked low on the list of the world’s busiest airports. In 2014, Dubai edged out London Heathrow and Hong Kong to be the world’s leading airport by international passenger count. (Atlanta’s airport is still the largest in combined domestic and international passenger count, at 95 million per year.) By 2019, the Dubai airport is expected to reach 100 million international passengers yearly. Around 2025, a second and even larger airport will open in Dubai at an investment of $80 billion, with the ability to serve 120 million passengers per year.

You might as well get used to it, the more that you look at the Internet on your smartphone and tablet, the more you’re going to be faced with a growing array of ads on your mobile screen.

Consumers are hooked on smart wireless devices, and advertisers can’t afford to ignore this mass market. (Roughly 60% of U.S. cellphone users, or about 200 million people, own smartphones and/or tablets.) The key to making such advertising work is through selective targeting, that is, directing the right ad at the right person. Since the ads are going to be coming anyway, you may want to make the most of it by allowing your device to track your interests and your location. For example, Apple states, “To give you the best advertising experience, we recommend that you keep Limit Ad Tracking turned off…” In other words, let your device gather information about the web sites you visit and thus build a profile of your interests.
More complicated is location-based advertising. Your smartphone is a pretty amazing collection of communications tools in one small package. Unless you opt out by turning off the location services on your phone, ad-generation systems may collect information about your whereabouts from cellular towers, Wi-Fi and your phone’s built-in GPS. The ability of location services to pinpoint your location will improve over time, and you will see a growing number of retail, restaurant and entertainment ads targeted specifically to your current spot. This may be very useful, or very annoying, depending on your current needs.

Apparel prices in most nations actually fell, on an inflation-adjusted basis, for several years. Globalization, highly efficient supply chains in Asia and huge numbers of factories throughout China and Southeast Asia that competed fiercely for manufacturing contracts drove down prices overall. That trend is now over.

China enjoyed a 37.8% market share of global apparel exports in 2012, at $160 billion, up from a mere $8.9 billion in 1990. Now, however, Chinese manufacturers face increasing difficulties in attracting and retaining workers. Wages have risen dramatically as a result. At the same time, as demand for employees has risen, workers have been calling for better working conditions. In fact, apparel and textile workers in many parts of the world are beginning to demand shorter hours and safer working environments. The collapse of a multi-story apparel factory in Bangladesh in 2013, killing more than 1,100 workers, immediately resulted in a global focus on workers’ rights and working conditions in the apparel manufacturing sector. The net effect is going to be steadily rising costs for manufacturers and increasingly higher retail prices for consumers.

Competition from manufacturers based in lower cost nations such as Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan is intense, and a large portion of apparel manufacturing formerly done in China is moving to these areas at a rapid pace. China’s industrial base is evolving towards higher value manufacturing, such as aerospace, medical technology and telecommunications equipment.
