Cloud Gaming Grows, Business and Industry Trends Analysis

Gamers playing on game consoles, PCs, tablets and laptops face limitations when it comes to device memory, processing speed and the like. Cloud gaming offers an almost limitless alternative. A startup called Shinra, which is a subsidiary of Japanese game manufacturer Square Enix, is working to develop the world’s most powerful cloud-based platform for games. Shinra plans to offer developers use of its supercomputers and data centers to design bigger, faster, more complex games. A demo played in mid-2015 featured multiple players moving through a 32 kilometer by 32 kilometer virtual world boasting 16,000 dragons each driven independently by artificial intelligence.
In early 2015, Sony launched PlayStation Now, a cloud-based subscription service that can be played on TVs without requiring official PlayStation consoles. For $19.99 per month, the service offers more than 200 game titles, hosted on Sony’s expanded servers and cloud networks. Electronic Arts offers its own $5 per month subscription service called EA Access. Users have access to downloads of EA’s old games as well as early access to new releases.
