The Future of the Telecommunications Industry Incudes 6G, Edge Computing, AI and M2M Communications, Business and Industry Trends Analysis

For the long-term, 6G wireless technologies loom on the horizon, which will require both huge investments in research by equipment manufacturers, and immense investments in infrastructure by wireless services providers.  6G Services could be offered in some areas by the early 2030’s.
6G will utilize higher frequencies than existing networks.  Key features will include much higher throughput speeds and data capacity, with virtually no transmission delays (low latency).  6G will be a big boost to entertainment and geolocation-based services, such as advertising and mapping.  It will also provide a basis for future immersion/metaverse services.
However, many, many pieces have to fall into place before 6G can become a reality:
=         Industry standards must be agreed to and adopted on a global basis.
=         Specific goals and models for software must be laid out.
=         Years of effort in network hardware engineering will be required.
=         Handset design, engineering and testing is required on a massive scale.
=         Antenna network upgrades are likely to be required.
=         At the same time, companies and labs focused on utilizing 6G for ultrafast M2M (machine-to-machine) communications must accomplish engineering and design for remote wireless sensors that can take advantage of 6G.
Elsewhere, the future will see a significant rollout in wireless M2M services, in everything from manufacturing to transportation to agriculture.  Edge computing, or the application of computing power near the location where data was produced, may become very widespread.
The current revolution in satellite communications will reach very significant milestones, with the use of tens of thousands of LEO (low Earth-orbit) satellites that are highly cost-efficient.  This will further boost remote communications, such as M2M and the internet of things (IoT).
Smartphones will continue to improve with regard to energy efficiency and available services.  Additionally, AI features such as photograph enhancement tools, health and wellness tracking, language translation and content creation and editing are offered on some of the latest smartphones.  Landlines will become ancient relics, rarely used.  Homes, businesses and government will continue to create demand for better, faster internet delivery, by both wired and wireless means.
Unfortunately, this immense growth in the complexity of and reliance on communications systems will become an ever-larger temptation to fraudsters, hackers and other misuse.  Communications security solutions and technologies will continue to soar as an industry.  Investments will be massive.  This includes national security-level needs to protect against cyber attacks on defense systems and critical civilian networks and infrastructure.
