The Coronavirus’ Effect on the Engineering & Research Industry, Business and Industry Trends Analysis

The Coronavirus pandemic had a mixed effect on global engineering and research companies, activities and investment.
=         The pandemic was clearly positive for some research-based industries.  That includes pharmaceuticals (such as vaccines and biotech drugs), medical diagnostics and certain medical technologies; research for sanitation technologies, such as the potential broader use of ultraviolet rays to kill germs and viruses; and research based on big data and the use of artificial intelligence to determine vital patterns in disease progression and control.
=         At the federal and national level, research projects aimed at finding prevention, control and cure breakthroughs for the Coronavirus received generous funding.  Emergency funding for medical and drug research has been a big boost to the drug sector.  At the same time, stimulus funding may lead to increased money for heavy infrastructure engineering projects such as highways, bridges and water systems.
=         In many cases, however, the global economic slowdown caused by the pandemic delayed or cancelled many academic research projects.  University budgets were constrained, due to uncertainties about tuition income and endowment account values.  State-level support of academic institutions faced budgetary constraints.
=         Corporate budgets in many types of industries, ranging from automobile manufacturing to consumer products to electronics, faced cuts due to lower revenues and profits.  This delayed or reduced funding for research and engineering departments.
Overall, the Coronavirus had widely disparate results for engineering and research as a whole, as funding sources shift, needs evolve and unknowns are faced.
