The Coronavirus’ Effect on Education, Business and Industry Trends Analysis

The global Coronavirus pandemic effectively shut down physical classrooms on every level throughout the world.  From preschoolers to students in university graduate programs, all were sent home until further notice.  Worldwide, hundreds of millions of students and teachers were forced to learn and teach online, according to UNESCO.
Those schools and institutions that had online programs already up and running were far ahead of the game, managing to continue classes on a remote basis.  Other schools, especially those serving students with little or no access to computers, had no way of continuing during the “shelter at home” period and missed out on a semester of work.
Digital learning was accelerated dramatically by the Coronavirus pandemic.  A desire to make it more difficult for disease to spread on school campuses may make some of this shift permanent.  For example, huge freshman courses, that sometimes have a few hundred students enrolled at once at colleges and universities, are now likely to be delivered online, rather than in a giant, crowded lecture hall.  Many other courses may be delivered in a hybrid model, with the students rotating the days they spend studying from home with days spent in the classroom.
The net positive effect was 1) Rapid growth in adoption of online education tools by public and private schools at nearly all grade levels, 2) A major boost to investment in education technology investment and development, 3) Rapid growth in acceptance of online classes by students, teachers, administrators and parents.
At the same time, however, many parents were disappointed by what they felt like was underperformance by their children’s schools when there were in online mode, and many parents and students alike felt like the results of their rush to distance learning were very disappointing.  Educators today have a much better grasp of what does and does not work well when implementing education technology.  While classroom attendance soared post-covid, greater reliance on EdTech is here to stay.
