Pharmaceutical R&D Improves with Artificial Intelligence (AI), Business and Industry Trends Analysis

The use of AI and robotics is helping to speed the discovery and development of new pharmaceutical materials and chemicals, as well as repurpose existing drugs.  AI and machine learning have been vital to the development of Coronavirus vaccines and in tracking the spread of the virus.  AI’s ability to analyze staggering amounts of data and conduct simulations around the clock exponentially sped the creation of vaccines and virus therapies.  The virus has proven to many researchers that AI is a valuable tool for identifying signals to point the way towards successful treatments.
Massachusetts based startup Kebotix (www.kebotix.com), for example, uses a combination of AI and robotics to speed the development process and reduce costs.  Deep Genomics (www.deepgenomics.com), another startup, uses AI to search for oligonucleotide molecules to treatments of genetic diseases such as neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders.  Yet another new company, Atomwise (www.atomwise.com), uses neural networks to analyze big data for its drug discovery process.
Meanwhile, Pharnext (www.pharnext.com) puts AI to work to find ways to leverage existing drugs into better treatments, alone or in combination.  The process analyzes millions of cases drug and patient data to isolate significant patterns.  In late 2018, Pharnext reported positive results for patients suffering from a neurodegenerative disorder called Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) when treated with a novel compound called PXT3003.  The therapy was in Phase 3 trials as of early 2023.  The firm is also working on drugs for treating Alzheimer’s and ALS.
In late 2021, New York startup Paige.AI, Inc. received FDA approval for its Paige Prostate diagnosis tool for prostate cancer.  The tool utilizes neural network technology (in which layers of artificial neurons function in a human brain-like manner in order to best analyze data).  Paige’s technology recognizes patterns typically found in prostate biopsy slides.  Paige Prostate is one of about 300 AI-based medical systems marketed in the U.S.  Other AI-enabled drug companies include Helixon Ltd. and Ainnocence.
