On-Demand Products and Services on the Rise in Pet Care, Laundry and At-Home Hair and Beauty Care, Business and Industry Trends Analysis

An on-demand business model is taking hold in sectors far beyond on-demand taxi service.  Take, for example, Glamsquad, a service that delivers beauty technicians and tools on-demand in New York, Southern California, South Florida and Washington, D.C.  Services include at-home hair, makeup and nail treatments and take no more than one hour (multiple services are performed by multiple aestheticians working simultaneously).  Clients use a mobile app to book services and appointment times as well as process payment via credit card information entered into the app.  This service is perfect for busy women willing to pay a bit more for the convenience of at-home services.  It is also perfect for brides getting prepared for their wedding day.

With regard to pet care, new apps for on-demand services and pet are proliferating quickly.  Wag Labs, Inc. owns and operates the Wag! mobile app for dog walking services which are available in dozens of cities throughout the U.S.  Users set up accounts for dog walking service performed by background-checked, insured and bonded dog walkers.  The app uses GPS to track each walk, including distance, duration and the dog’s activities, and the walker sends a report card at the conclusion of the walk with a photo or video.  Wag! provides lock boxes for key storage to allow walkers access to homes and pets when owners are away from home.  Walkers are available from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm seven days per week.  During peak hours, most on-demand requests are filled within 30 minutes of booking.  The app also offers the ability to request overnight pet sitting or boarding.  The company was founded in 2014 in Los Angeles, California.  In 2016, the company launched mobile grooming services in Los Angeles.

On-demand veterinary services are also appearing, such as Treat, Inc. in Northern California.  It offers a mobile app through which pet owners can chat online with a veterinarian and schedule in home appointments for veterinary care

Proctor & Gamble Co. (P&G) has joined the sharing economy with an on-demand laundry service in the Chicago, Illinois area.  Using an app called Tide Spin, users schedule a time for laundry pickup.  Items are picked up by couriers and cleaned at a Tide facility and returned within two days in a reusable bag.   The company has also aggressively expanded its chain of Tide dry cleaning stores nationwide.
