Number of Uninsured Americans Declines But Remains High, Business and Industry Trends Analysis

In 2021, the number of uninsured dropped to 8.3% (27.2 million) and for 2022, the number dropped again to 7.9% (25.9 million).  For 2023, the number rose slightly to 26.4 million or 8.0%.  It is worthwhile to note that the official survey of the uninsured attempts to include all people residing in the United States, regardless of whether they are in America legally.
In addition to the number of people with no insurance at all, the number of underinsured Americans remains a massive problem.  In many cases, consumers can only afford health plans that have very high deductibles.  These deductibles often run from $1,000 to $5,000 yearly, and most types of care must be paid for out of the consumer’s pocket before the insurer begins to pay.  Many consumers simply do not have sufficient cash on hand to deal with this burden.
