New Companies Score Big Successes in Adult and Leisure Learning Online, Business and Industry Trends Analysis

There is significant growth in the online market for continuing education, as well as for instruction in leisure subjects such as arts and crafts.  This segment saw booming growth as a result of the stay-at-home regulations during the Coronavirus pandemic.  For example, LinkedIn Learning, formerly Lynda.com, offers thousands of online courses, comprised of tens of thousands of video lectures, in a variety of subjects including business skills, education, software development, 3-D animation and photography.  Another example is Pluralsight (www.pluralsight.com), which provides subscribers with digital learning tools including adaptive skill tests, directed learning paths, expert-authored courses, interactive labs and live mentoring for individuals and corporate teams.  A network of 1,000 experts produces the site’s courseware, with royalties paid based on how often content is viewed (one instructor was reported to have earned $2 million in one year).
As for leisure learning, sites such as Creativebug (www.creativebug.com) offer a plethora of different online courses in everything from knitting to baking to drawing.  Classes are modestly priced and may include multiple lessons.  For example, the Botanical Watercolor Illustration course has seven on-demand lessons in botanical illustration, totals a bit more than one hour.
A company called The Great Courses (www.thegreatcourses.com) has built a tremendous business by offering online- and DVD-based lectures by outstanding professors, covering topics ranging from philosophy to the great religions to history to economics.  Rosetta Stone (www.rosettastone.com) has likewise built a very large business offering discs and online versions of language lessons.
