Massive, Long Term Growth in China’s Travel Market/Indian Travel Market Rebounds, Business and Industry Trends Analysis

Both India and China enjoyed soaring travel industries in recent years, with hundreds of new hotels constructed and rapid expansion of both airlines and airports.  It remains to be seen what the long-term impact of the Coronavirus will be on the travel sector in these nations.  Chinese citizens, according to the World Tourism Organization, made 155 million overseas trips in 2019, up from 149.7 million in 2018 and 145 million in 2017.
A number of hotels in the U.S. and Europe are offering special services aimed at Chinese travelers.  J.W. Marriott has a Li Yu program (meaning “to serve with courtesy”) while Hilton Worldwide has a Huanying (“welcome”) program.  These efforts may include dedicated check-in desks, television channels in Mandarin, congee rice porridge at breakfast and Chinese-labelled toiletries and do-not-disturb signs.
China Southern Airlines Co., Air China and China Eastern Airlines are ranked among the top global carriers by capacity.  Chinese airlines have been finding success in offering low fares to international destinations such as London and Sydney.
India’s growing economy also boosted travel to a dramatic extent in recent years.  Indian infrastructure, specifically runways, maintenance centers and pilots, will have to be significantly expanded to handle projected increases in traffic over the long term.
For India, ITC Hotels opened the ITC Kohenur in Hyderabad in 2018, with two additional new luxury hotels opened in 2019 (the ITC Hotel Kolkata II and the ITC Hotel Ahmedabad).  Marriott Hotels had 128 properties in India by mid-2021.  India’s luxury hotels and resorts, including the premier properties operated by Taj and Oberoi, are consistently rated at the top of the industry.
