Blowout Bars Proliferate, Business and Industry Trends Analysis

Blowout bars are hair salons that provide shampooing, drying and styling services called blowouts.  No other hair services, such as haircuts or coloring, are offered, which significantly simplifies management of the business.  While some U.S. states still require licensing for blow-out technicians that carry education requirements that are daunting, others are requiring lower education hours.  A few states do not require a license at all, as long as the technician is not cutting or coloring hear.  This trend is likely to increase.
The leading U.S. blowout company is Drybar, LLC (www.drybar.com), which had more than 160 locations throughout the U.S. and in Canada as of early 2024.  Stylists are available for off-site special events such as parties and weddings with one stylist able to handle about four people per hour.  Clients may also book Drybar salons for private events.  In addition, Drybar branded products, including shampoos, conditioners, styling products, blow dryers, curling irons, brushes, combs and hair accessories, are available for sale online and at select retail stores such as Nordstrom and Ulta.  Seven-day-per-week-hours are extended, meaning most locations open at 7 a.m. on weekdays and stay open until 8 or 9 p.m. to accommodate busy women’s schedules.  In 2020, Drybar sold its line of products to Helen of Troy Limited for $255 million.  During 2021, WellBiz Brands, Inc. acquired the franchisor rights for Drybar shops.  Drybar LLC continues to operate more than 80 owned Drybar shops.
Growing numbers of copycat blowout bars have opened in recent years.  Many offer memberships featuring discounts for repeat visits and additional perks such as discounted products and free birthday blowouts.
