AI Profoundly Impacts the Entertainment Industry, Business and Industry Trends Analysis

Artificial intelligence (AI) is radically changing how entertainment is created, produced, performed and marketed, while it has a massive impact on issues relating to copyright protection and job loss and creation.  AI impacts all sectors of the entertainment and media industry, from film to television to music to gaming and beyond.
With regard to content creation, AI can and is generating scripts and music lyrics based on computer analysis of viewer/listener trends and preferences.  The technology is heavily relied on by streaming services to make personalized content recommendations relating to user behavior, preferences and historical data.
Video editors utilize AI tools to speed tasks such as color correction, scene segmentation and summarization.  Scenes that previously required reshooting can be quickly altered using digital images rather than live actors.  Special effects generated by AI look realistic and save film and television producers time, expense and effort.  Sound dubbing is also faster and easier with AI, which enables translations into different languages to be made in the same voice of the original actor.  Similar technology allowed dialog by actor Val Kilmer (a survivor of throat cancer) to be generated for the film Top Gun: Maverick.  The result can be massive savings of time, manpower and money for production companies.
AI also enables virtual and augmented reality for gamers and film audiences.  Realistic simulations immerse players/movie goers in limitless possibilities in environment, story and interaction.  Gaming especially is enhanced by AI through dynamically generated content, including game levels, fictional worlds/locales, characters, opponents and storylines.
Music composition and production can be done using AI.  Songs and scores with specified moods, genres or styles similar to those of certain artists are being created by computers.
A positive effect of AI is the ability to monitor and enforce copyright protection by scanning the internet for unauthorized uses of intellectual property.  Conversely, AI itself is seen by many as copyright infringement by generating outputs that resemble existing works.  In December 2023, the New York Times filed suit against Microsoft and OpenAI claiming that the technology companies’ “widescale copying” (development of massive amounts of digital knowledge as required for generative AI) is copyright infringement.
Concerns about AI were central in a 2023 strike by members of the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).  Movie studios agreed to a number of concessions, including requiring the consent from actors to create and use digital replicas of themselves or characters.  Actors are also entitled to compensation for work lost to digital performers.
