Wireless Service Subscriptions Worldwide Top 7.1 Billion, Business and Industry Trends Analysis

Around the world, the wireless market continues to grow.  As of the end of 2023, there were 405.1 million mobile internet connections of all types in use in the U.S. (according to Plunkett Research estimates).  On a global basis, Plunkett Research estimates there were 9.0 billion subscriptions as of the early 2024.
However, the actual number of individuals who subscribe to wireless connections is considerably lower than the total number of subscriptions.  There are several reasons for this.  In emerging nations, many people have multiple service subscriptions.  Subscribers own and swap multiple SIM, or network subscription cards, on a frequent basis within their handsets, depending on the level of service quality available in a given location, or the balance left in a prepaid subscription account.  In developed nations, subscribers may own multiple devices that require subscriptions, such as aircards, smartphones and tablets.
