Government and Private Nanotechnology Research Funding Is Substantial, Business and Industry Trends Analysis

The U.S. government established the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) in 2001, setting up an agency to oversee intense federal funding of nanotech research.  For 2016, the estimated NNI budget was $1.5 billion.  Most of this money is filtered through the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy, while programs are coordinated by the National Nanotechnology Initiative, for applications in aerospace, defense, intelligence, medicine, energy production and distribution and computing.

According to a study written for the U.S. Congress, more than 60 nations have set up government funding for nanotech research.  By 2015, this public funding totaled about $10 billion per year, with private industry investing another $10 billion, according to Plunkett Research estimates.  Top nations in this regard include the U.S., Japan, Germany and China.  Technology giants such as IBM and Intel have significant internal research efforts and partnerships in nanotech, with dramatic breakthroughs in computer chip technology already occurring in their laboratories.
