and related lodging facilities worldwide, totaling over
480,000 rooms, including nearly 9,670 vacation ownership
villas, in the U.S. and 65 other countries and territories.
Marriott develops, operates and franchises hotels under
14 brand names, including Marriott Hotels and Resorts
(490 full-service hotels including 16 conference centers
and 34 JW Marriott Hotels); the Ritz-Carlton (57 luxury
hotels); Bulgari Hotel and Resort (one luxury hotel);
Renaissance Hotels, Resorts and Suites (133 quality
hotels); Courtyard (656 upper-moderate hotels); Residence
Inn (463 extended-stay inns); Fairfield Inn (523 lower-moderate
inns); SpringHill Suites (125 upper-moderate all-suite
hotels); and TownePlace Suites (115 mid-price extended-stay
hotels). The firm also provides furnished corporate
housing units in more than 40 major markets through
its ExecuStay service, as well as operating 14 upscale
serviced apartments through Marriott Executive Apartments.
The company develops, sells and operates 51 vacation
timesharing resorts, usually located adjacent to its
hotels, under the Marriott Vacation Club International,
Horizons by Marriott Vacation Club International, Ritz-Carlton
Club and Marriott Grand Residence Club brands. Additionally,
Marriott manages 49 golf course at 39 facilities worldwide.
In March 2005, Marriott established a 50/50 joint venture
with Whitbread plc to acquire Whitbread’s portfolio
of 46 franchised Marriott and Renaissance hotels, which
will be managed by the firm. The new joint venture expects
to sell properties to investors over the next two years.
In December 2004, the company sold to Cendant Corporation
its Ramada International Hotels & Resorts subsidiary,
which operates 204 hotels under the Ramada Plaza, Ramada
Hotels, Ramada Resorts and Ramada Encore brands.
