Verizon Communications, Inc. and its subsidiaries
form one of the world’s leading providers of communications
services, including wireline, wireless and Internet
services. The firm has over 140 million access line
equivalents and over 33 million wireless customers.
Global operations encompass more than 30 countries in
the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific. Verizon operates
in four business segments: domestic telecommunications,
domestic wireless, international and information services.
The domestic telecommunications segment provides local
telephone services, including voice and data transport,
network access and private lines, in 30 states. Domestic
wireless products and services include cellular, PCS
and paging services, as well as equipment sales. Information
services revenues amount to more than $4 billion yearly,
making Verizon one of the world's largest publishing
and information companies. Products include print and
electronic publishing, directories and Internet shopping
guides, as well as e-commerce services. As one of the
world's most aggressive adopters of new technologies,
Verizon is planning a long-term rollout of a complete
network upgrade. The firm will extend the availability
of high-speed fiber-optic lines directly into many homes
and offices. The result will be the availability of
DSL at extremely high speeds of 5 to 30 megabits per
second. These network improvements could support advanced
telephone services, streaming video and movies-on-demand.
Implementation began in 2004 and will take many years
to complete. The firm has one of the largest capital
investment budgets of any firm in the U.S., at about
$13 billion yearly. In July 2004, the company acquired
the assets of Qwest Wireless for $418 million, adding
spectrum width in 62 western markets. In February 2005,
Verizon agreed to buy MCI Communications for $8.4 billion
dollars. In addition, the company completed the acquisition
of NextWave's PCS wireless service bandwidth in 23 markets
for $3 billion. |
