Dell, Inc., a leading provider of computing products and services, supplies personal computers (PCs) to companies, government agencies, educational institutions and individual consumers. The company has two main lines of business: computer hardware and technology services. The computer hardware segment manufacture and markets servers, storage products, personal computers (PCs), laptop computers, and printers. The Dell line of high-performance computer systems includes Dimension and OptiPlex desktop computers, Latitude and Inspiron notebook computers, PowerEdge servers, PowerApp server appliances, Dell Precision workstation products and PowerVault storage products. The Dell service segment provides customized computer systems, system installation and management, guided technology transitions, online and telephone technical support and next-day on-site product service. Dell’s direct selling strategy bypasses retailers and middlemen by selling products online directly to end users. As a result of its direct business model, Dell is the leading seller of computer systems worldwide and the number-one seller in the individual and corporate customer segments in the United States in 2004. Dell also operates Dell Direct Stores in certain states as well as non-U.S. locations. These stores are kiosks, typically located within shopping centers, that allow customers to view Dell products in person and purchase products online with the assistance of a Dell expert. The firm also offers an online music download service in conjunction with Musicmatch and a line of consumer electronics, such as its DJ portable music players. These new offerings put the firm in direct competition with Apple's iTunes and iPod products. In December 2004, the firm announced plans to build a 500,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in North Carolina, with completion expected in Fall 2005.

Dell sponsors a number of diversity events and donates a significant amount of computer eqquipment to schools in under-privileged neighborhoods. Dell also provides workforce development to students, women and minorities.
