GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES
The San Francisco 49ers is a National Football League (NFL) team in the National Football Conference (NFC). The team was the first major league professional sports franchise on the West Coast. Brothers Anthony and Victor Morabito founded the franchise in 1946 as part of the All American Football Conference (AAFC). The team joined the NFL in 1950 when the AAFC collapsed. In 1977, the brothers sold the franchise to Edward DeBartolo. Since 1981, the 49ers have won 18 division titles and five conference championships, and it was the first franchise in NFL history to win five Super Bowl titles, most recently in 1994. The 49ers dominated the 1980s when they won four of their five Super Bowl Championships (1981, 1984, 1988 and 1989). San Francisco was able to produce 10 or more wins for 16 consecutive seasons, from 1983 to 1998. After Edward DeBartolo’s death in 1994, his children contended for control of DeBartolo Corporation. They finally split the company’s assets in 1999, when daughter Denise DeBartolo York gained full control of the 49ers. The team is now owned and operated by the San Francisco Forty Niners, Ltd., a subsidiary of DeBartolo Corporation. About 20 former 49ers are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including head coach Bill Walsh, who led the 49ers to three Super Bowl titles; quarterback Joe Montana, who retired with the highest quarterback rating in NFL history; Jerry Rice, who holds a number of wide receiver records; and Steve Young, who won six NFL passing titles. The team currently plays in the 50+ year-old Candlestick Park in San Francisco, which seats over 69,700 spectators. A recent Forbes estimate valued the team at $990 million. The franchise’s average attendance in the 2011 season was 69,732.
