GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES
FuelCell Energy, Inc. develops and manufactures fuel cell power plants for ultra-clean, efficient and reliable electric power generation. Its products have generated over 650 million kWh of electricity and are operating at over 50 locations worldwide. The firm’s patented carbonate fuel cells, Direct FuelCell (aka DFC Power Plants), are utilized for stationary power generation. FuelCell also develops both carbonate and planar solid oxide fuel cells. These products offer the advantages of near-zero levels of pollutants, quiet operation and reduced levels of carbon emissions. The company works to meet the power requirements of a diverse mix of customers, including manufacturers, utilities, corrections facilities, hospitals, universities and food processors, among others. The firm has three core power plant models: the DFC300, DFC1500 and DFC3000, rated at 300 kilowatts (kW), 1.4 megawatts (MW) and 2.8 MW, respectively. Its latest product is the DFC-ERG (Energy Recovery Generation) plant. With an electrical efficiency of 65%, it utilizes energy normally lost at pressure transformers in major natural gas lines to generate electricity. Fuelcell has worked on the further development of its fuel cell technology with agencies such as the U.S. Departments of Energy and Defense, the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency, the EPA and NASA. The company’s products are in use in South Korea, California, Connecticut and Canada. In May 2011, the company announced a $129 million order for 70 MW of fuel cell kits and other equipment and services to POSCO Power. In December 2011, FuelCell announced a partnership agreement with Abengoa S.A. to develop fuel cell power plants in Europe and Latin America.
