Ciena Corp. is a provider of communications networking equipment, software and services that support the transport, switching, aggregation and management of voice, video and data traffic. Its product portfolio includes a range of communications networking equipment and software that is utilized from the core of communications networks, from metropolitan network infrastructures to the network edge, where end users gain access to communications services. Products are offered in four major categories: carrier Ethernet service delivery devices, packet-optical switching devices, packet-optical transport devices and the Ciena One software suite. Carrier Ethernet service delivery devices are designed to provide intelligent access to high-speed Ethernet networks. Products in this category include the ActivEdge 3000 Series, the ActivEdge 5000 Series and the ActivFlex 5400 Series. Packet-optical switching devices are designed to provision and automate bandwidth to prevent slowdowns and overloads. Products in this category include the ActivFlex 5400 Series and the CoreDirector FS multiservice optical switch. Packet-optical transport devices are designed to provide scalable additions to an existing network. These products include the ActivSpan 4200 Series, the ActivSpan 5100/5200 and the ActivFlex 6500. The Ciena One software suite monitors and manages the functions of a network, including switching control and gateway management. Products include the On-Center Network and Services Management Suite and the CatenaView EMS voice, data and video operator. Ciena also offers consulting and technical implementation advice. The firm sells its communications networking equipment, software and services through direct sales efforts and channel relationships. The company services a wide variety of industries, including telecommunications, government, financial services, health care and education.
