Microsoft Corp. develops, manufactures and supports software for a wide range of computing devices. The company operates in five segments: Windows and Windows Live; Server and Tools; Online Services Business; Microsoft Business Division; and Entertainment and Devices Division. The Windows and Windows Live segment provides the premium and standard-edition Windows operating systems; maintains the Windows Live service; and develops the Internet Explorer browser. The company’s latest operating system is Windows 7. Other products in this segment include Windows Vista, Windows XP and Tablet PC Edition. The Server and Tools segment licenses products, applications, tools, content and services related to Windows server products and operating systems. The division offers the Windows Server operating system, Microsoft SQL Server, Visual Studio and System Center products, among others. The Online Services Business segment consists of an online advertising platform and provides personal services including Bing; Microsoft adCenter; MSN; and Atlas online tools for advertisers and publishers. The Microsoft Business Division offers the Microsoft Office and Office Web Apps systems, as well as Microsoft Dynamics business services. The Entertainment and Devices Division is responsible for developing, producing and marketing Xbox 360 video game systems, including consoles and accessories; Xbox LIVE; the Zune digital music and entertainment platform; PC software games; the Mediaroom Internet television software; and Windows Automotive. In October 2010, the company acquired Canesta, Inc., a developer of 3D sensing technologies. In November 2010, the company launched the Xbox Kinect, an advanced camera-based accessory for the Xbox 360; and Windows Phone 7, a new operating system for smartphone devices. In May 2011, the company agreed to acquire Skype for $8.5 billion. Microsoft offers its employees health, dental and vision coverage; on-site health screenings; health club memberships; cigarette smoking cessation programs; adoption assistance; childcare service discounts; autism behavioral therapy; a 401(k) plan; an employee stock purchase plan; charitable gift matching; tuition assistance; and online training programs.
