Abbott Laboratories' principal business is the discovery, development, manufacture and sale of a diversified line of health care products and services. The company operates through four major business segments: pharmaceutical products, diagnostic products, Ross products and international. The firm also owns a 50% interest in TAP Pharmaceutical Products, Inc., which makes the best-selling prostate cancer drug, Lupron, and Prevacid (a.k.a. Ogastro), a proton pump inhibitor for the short-term treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers and erosive esophagitis. The pharmaceutical products segment produces a broad line of adult and pediactric pharmaceuticals, such as Depakote, which treats epilepsy, migraine and bipolar disorder; the anti-infective clarithromycin; various forms of erythromycin; and a broad line of cardiovascular products. The diagnostics segment markets diagnostic systems for blood banks, hospitals, commercial laboratories, alternate-care testing sites and consumers. The Ross products segment manufactures a broad line of adult and pediatric nutritionals, as well as specialty pharmaceuticals. Ross brands include Similac and Isomil infant formulas, Ensure, Pedialyte and Zone Perfect. The international segment markets a broad line of pharmaceutical and nutritional products outside the U.S., including anti-virals Kaletra and Norvir (protease inhibitors for the treatment of HIV infection), Synagis for the prevention of respiratory syncytial virus, HUMIRA for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular products, anesthesia products, and adult and pediatric nutritional products. In 2004, Abbot spent approximately $1.7 billion on research and development. In other news, Abbot acquired EAS, Inc., a national supplement manufacturer. The company spun off its hospital products segment to form Hospira, Inc.

Abbott offers a full benefits package to its employees. Fortune Magazine has ranked Abbott as one of the top 50 companies for minorities, and Working Mother magazine ranked it among the top 10 best companies for working mothers.
