The Walt Disney Company is a diversified international entertainment company with operations in filmed entertainment, theme parks and resorts, television and radio broadcasting, online entertainment, retailing, music, book publishing and consumer products. Disney operates in four major business segments: studio entertainment, parks and resorts, media networks and consumer products. The firm produces and acquires theatrical movies under the banners Walt Disney, Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, Miramax and Dimension. Disney also operates the ABC Television Network, as well as ABC Radio Networks, and has a partial stake in several cable channels, including The Disney Channel, ESPN, A&E Television Networks, Lifetime Television and E! Entertainment Television. In addition, Disney operates ESPN Zone, a sport-themed restaurant with eight locations in major markets across the U.S. The company operates or licenses 10 theme parks on three continents with an 11th park to open in late 2005 in Hong Kong, along with 35 resort hotels and two luxury cruise ships. In addition, the firm owns the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, a professional hockey team, and a wide variety of other entertainment offerings, including several web sites such as Disney Online, espn.com and abcnews.com. In February 2004, cable TV operator Comcast made an unexpected bid to acquire Disney, but on February 16th the Board of Directors of the Walt Disney Company unanimously rejected the proposal. Also in February 2004, Disney entered into an agreement to acquire the Muppets and Bear in the Big Blue House properties from the Jim Henson Company. In October 2004, the company spun off and sold its Walt Disney Stores to the Children's Place. Walt Disney employees receive theme park passports, educational reimbursement, discounts on products and merchandise and on-site child care in specific locations.
