GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES
The Walt Disney Company is an international entertainment company operating in five primary business segments: media networks; studio entertainment; consumer products; parks and resorts; and interactive media. The media networks segment, which operates ABC Television Network, is involved in domestic broadcast television; cable/satellite networks; international broadcast operations; television production and distribution; domestic broadcast radio; and Internet operations. The company also owns interest in and/or operates numerous cable networks, including ESPN, ABC Family, the History Channel and A&E. The studio entertainment segment produces and acquires feature films, direct-to-video programming, musical recordings and live stage plays. Its motion picture subsidiaries include Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Pixar and Marvel. The consumer products segment designs, promotes and sells merchandise based on the firm’s intellectual property. The parks and resorts segment owns and operates Florida’s Walt Disney World Resort; Disney Cruise Line; the Disneyland resort in California; Adventures by Disney; and the Disney Vacation Club. It also holds interest in the Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland resorts, and licenses the Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan. The interactive media segment creates and delivers company-branded entertainment and lifestyle content across interactive media platforms. The group’s primary operating businesses are Disney Interactive Studios, which produces video games; and Disney Online, which produces web sites and online virtual worlds. Additionally, the segment maintains the firm’s Japan-based Disney-branded mobile phone business. In April 2011, the firm began construction of the Shanghai Disney Resort, a joint venture with Shanghai Shendi Group. In November 2011, the firm acquired a 49% interest in the Seven TV network from UTH Russia Ltd. for $300 million, to be converted into an ad-supported, free-to-air Disney Channel in Russia.
