Amerada
Hess Corporation explores for, produces, purchases,
transports and sells crude oil and natural gas.
The company refines oil as well. Its exploration
and production take place primarily in the United
States, the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, Equatorial
Guinea, Gabon, Indonesia, Thailand and Azerbaijan.
Amerada’s proved reserves contain about 640
million barrels and 2.4 billion cu. ft of natural
gas. In addition, it owns 50% of a refinery joint
venture, called the Hovensa refinery, with Petroleos
de Venezuela in the United States Virgin Islands;
it also owns a fluid catalytic refining facility
in Port Reading in New Jersey. The firm has terminals
and retail outlets along the East Coast of the U.S.
It has approximately 1,254 Hess gas stations and
convenience stores from Massachusetts to Florida.
Amerada markets refined petroleum products on the
East Coast to the motoring public, wholesale distributors,
industrial and commercial users, other petroleum
companies, governmental agencies and public utilities.
Through its subsidiaries, the company sells natural
gas and electricity to utilities and other industrial
and commercial customers. In October of 2005, Amerada
made an agreement with the Apache Corp. to acquire
a majority share of a deep water Mediterranean Sea
section belonging to Egypt. The firm will add this
resource to the deepwater operations it runs in
the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
Amerada
forms its employees into small work units, resulting
in an emphasis on teamwork and progress. It promotes
from within, based on merit. Benefits for employees
include cash bonuses, tuition assistance, subsidized
on-site dining and work life programs. It recruits
several MBAs yearly.
