Microsoft Corp., the world’s largest software firm, develops, manufactures and supports a wide range of software for business, government and consumers. The company offers online services; input devices; operating systems; server applications for client/server environments; business and consumer productivity applications; software development tools; and Internet and intranet software and technologies including .NET for web services. Microsoft has seven business units: Windows Client, Information Worker, Microsoft Business Solutions, Server and Tools, Mobile and Embedded Devices, MSN and Home Entertainment. The Windows Client segment includes Windows XP, Widows 2000 and Windows Embedded. The Information Worker segment includes Microsoft Office, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Project and other stand-alone desktop applications. The Microsoft Business Solutions segment includes the Great Plains and Navision applications and bCentral business services portal. The Servers and Tools segment includes Windows Server System and MSDN (Microsoft Developers Network). The Mobile and Embedded Devices segment includes Windows Powered Pocket PC, the Mobile Explorer microbrowser and the Windows Powered Smartphone software platform. MSN, includes the MSN network, MSN Internet Access, MSNTV, MSN Hotmail and other Internet services. The Home Entertainment segment includes Xbox, online games, software and TV platforms. Microsoft has been making a serious move into web services with its .NET initiative. Other initiatives include Passport.net, Office.net and VisualBasic.net. Microsoft has a $6-billion research and development budget and is currently focusing on developing enterprise solutions for unsolicited e-mail, worms and viruses.

Microsoft provides its workforce with medical, dental and vision care, relocation expenses, health club membership, tuition reimbursement and adoption assistance. Restricted stock awards are granted to qualified employees, a 2003 shift from the firm's long-standing stock option plan.
