GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES
BASF SE, formerly BASF AG, is a chemical manufacturing company that serves customers in more than 200 countries. The firm operates in six business segments: chemicals; plastics; performance products; agricultural solutions; functional solutions; and oil and gas. The chemicals segment manufactures inorganic, petrochemical and intermediate chemicals for the pharmaceutical, construction, textile and automotive industries. The plastics segment manufactures polystyrene and performance polymers for the manufacturing and packaging industries. The performance products segment produces pigments, inks, printing supplies, coatings and polymers for the automotive, oil, packaging, textile, detergent, sanitary care, construction and chemical industries. BASF also employs chemical nanotechnology to produce pigments used to color coatings, paints, plastics and sunscreen. The firm's agricultural solutions segment produces genetically engineered plants, nutritional supplements, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides for use in agriculture, public health and pest control. The functional solutions segment develops automotive and industrial catalysts; construction chemicals; and coatings and refinishes for the automotive and construction markets. The oil and gas segment, operated through Wintershall AG, focuses on petroleum and natural gas exploration and production in North America, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In January 2011, BASF announced the completion of its acquisition of CRI/Criterion’s styrene catalysts business. In August 2011, the firm announced the completion of its acquisition of ultra filtration specialists Inge Watertechnologies AG. In October 2011, BASF and Ji’Ning Hock Mining & Engineering Equipment Company Ltd. received approval for the formation of a joint venture company in China to be called BASF Hock Mining Chemical Company Ltd.; BASF will take a majority stake of 75% in the new venture.
