Microsoft Corp. develops, manufactures and supports software for businesses, government and consumers. The company offers online services; input devices; operating systems; server applications; business and consumer productivity applications; software development tools; and Internet and intranet software and technologies. Microsoft operates in seven segments. The client segment produces technical architecture, engineering and product delivery of the Windows product family. Products include Windows XP Professional and Home; Media Center Edition; and Tablet PC Edition. The server and tools segment develops and markets Windows server products and operating systems; builds standalone and software development lifecycle tools for software architects, developers, testers and project managers; and provides consulting and product support services. The information worker segment consists of the Microsoft Office system of programs, services and software solutions. The Microsoft business solution segment through the Microsoft Dynamics brand offers financial management, customer relationship management, supply chain management and analytics applications. The MSN segment provides services such as e-mail and instant messaging; online information offerings such as MSN Search, MapPoint and MSN portals and channels; and a variety of online paid offerings. The mobile and embedded devices segment develops and markets products that extend the Windows platform to mobile devices such as PDAs and phones and to embedded devices. The home and entertainment segment develops, produces and markets the Xbox video game system, PC software games, online games and other devices. In 2006, the firm partnered with DIRECTV to explore digital music, television and movies in portable devices. In early 2007, Microsoft released Windows Vista. In May 2007, the firm agreed to acquire aQuantive, Inc. for roughly $6 billion. In May 2007, the firm acquired Tellme Networks, Inc., a provider of nationwide directory assistance and voice-enabled mobile search.
Microsoft offers its employees a 401(k) plan; an employee stock purchase plan; medical, dental and vision care; and life insurance.
