| | GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES | Barr Pharmaceuticals, Inc. engages in the development, manufacture and marketing of generic and proprietary prescription pharmaceuticals. The company manufactures generic products under the Barr label through its Barr Laboratories subsidiary, and it produces proprietary products under the Duramed label through subsidiary Duramed Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Part of the firm’s business strategy is to develop generic versions of other companies’ drugs and then challenge the patents that protect them under the claim that such patents are invalid, unenforceable or not infringed by the company's product. The company’s generic business segment manufactures and distributes over 100 dosage forms and strengths of over 75 different generic pharmaceutical products, including 22 oral contraceptive products, which represent the largest category of the generic portfolio, and an anticoagulant, Warfarin Sodium, for heart disease patients and those at high risk of stroke. The company currently has 19 proprietary products, which include the Seasonale, Seasonique and Mircette oral contraceptive product lines; the Cenestin and Enjuvia lines of hormone therapy products; and the Plan B emergency contraceptive product, approved by the FDA in August 2006 for non-prescription sale to people 18 years or older. In July 2007, the company received FDA approval to manufacture and market a generic version of Dostinex, currently supplied by Pharmacia and Upjohn Company, which it will supply through an agreement it has with Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd. The drug treats hyperprolactinemic disorders, a condition caused by an excess of the hormone prolactin in the blood often due to a tumor and sometimes by some other cause. In July 2007, the firm received FDA approval to market a generic form of the antifungal drug, Lamisil, currently supplied by Novartis Pharmaceutical Corp., which will be manufactured by Gedeon Richter Plc. Barr will only market the product in the U.S.
Barr Laboratories provides employees with tuition reimbursement programs.
