| | GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES | | The San Francisco 49ers are a National Football League (NFL) team in the National Football Conference (NFC). The team was the first major league professional sports franchise on the West Coast. Brothers Anthony and Victor Morabito founded the franchise in 1946 as part of the All American Football Conference (AAFC). The team joined the NFL in 1950 when the AAFC collapsed. In 1977, the brothers sold the franchise to Edward DeBartolo, who revamped the franchise. Since 1981, the 49ers have won 13 division titles and five conference championships, and it was the first franchise in NFL history to win five Super Bowl titles, most recently in 1994. The 49ers dominated the 1980s when they won four of their five Super Bowl games (1981, 1984, 1988 and 1989). The team extended its dominance in the 1990s, becoming the only NFL team to produce 10 or more wins for 16 consecutive seasons, from 1983 to 1998. After Edward DeBartolo’s death in 1994, his son Edward, Jr. and daughter Denise DeBartolo York fought over their father’s company, DeBartolo Corporation. They finally split the company’s assets in 1999, when York gained full control of the 49ers. The team is now owned and operated by the San Francisco Forty Niners, Ltd., a subsidiary of DeBartolo Corporation. The franchise has 13 individuals, both players and coaches, in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including head coach Bill Walsh, who led the 49ers to three Super Bowl titles; quarterback Joe Montana, who retired with the highest quarterback rating in NFL history; and Steve Young, who is tied as the only quarterback to win six NFL passing titles. The team currently plays in Candlestick Park (a.k.a. Monster Park) in San Francisco, but plans to move to a new stadium by the start of the 2012 season. |
