| | GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES | | FuelCell Energy, Inc. develops and manufactures fuel cell power plants for ultra-clean, efficient and reliable electric power generation. To date, its products have generated over 200 million kWh of electricity and are operating at over 40 locations around the world. The firm has developed a proprietary patented carbonate fuel cell utilized for stationary power generation. Its patented fuel cell technology is known as the Direct FuelCell (DFC), because it introduces hydrocarbon fuel, such as pipeline natural gas or biogas from breweries, directly into the fuel cell without requiring external reforming for producing hydrogen. This one-step operation results in a more efficient, simpler and more cost-effective energy conversion system than other fuel cells which utilize complex external reforming equipment to convert fuel to hydrogen. It designs its products to meet the power requirements of a wide range of customers, including utilities, wastewater treatment plants, industrial facilities, hospitals, data centers, shopping centers and universities. The firm has three core power plants, the DFC300, DFC1500 and DFC3000, rated at 300 kilowatts (kW), 1.2 megawatts (MW) and 2.4 MW respectively, designed for applications up to 50 MW. Its latest product is the 2.2 MW DFC-ERG (Energy Recovery Generation) plant, which utilizes energy normally lost at pressure transformers in major natural gas lines to generate electricity. Significant funding for the organization comes from the U.S. Department of Energy, the Department of Defense and the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as other outside sources. In January 2008, FuelCell received approval from the Connecticut Department of Utility Control for 16.2 MW of projects and incorporates six of the firms DFC3000 fuel cells. |
