| | GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES | Affymetrix, Inc. develops technology for examining and managing complex genetic information by applying the principles of semiconductor technology to molecular biology research and the life sciences. The company uses photolithography and solid-phase chemistry to produce arrays containing hundreds of thousands of oligonucleotide (a short polymer of two to 20 nucleotides) probes packed at extremely high densities. Affymetrix markets its technologies to customers based on two central applications: gene expression monitoring and DNA variation detection. Customers include pharmaceutical, biotechnology, agrichemical, diagnostics and consumer products companies, as well as academic research centers, government research laboratories, private foundation laboratories and clinical reference laboratories in North America, Europe, Latin America, India and the Middle East and Asia Pacific regions, including China. The range of Affymetrix’s GeneChip Expression products includes standard expression monitoring arrays, Exon Arrays and Whole Genome Tiling Arrays for a number of major organisms such as human, mouse, drosophilia, C.elegans and yeast. The GeneChip platform includes disposable DNA probe arrays, certain reagents, processing instruments and software for managing and analyzing information. In addition to its GeneChip expression monitoring arrays, the company markets CustomExpress and CustomSeq products, enabling the custom design of GeneChip expression arrays or sequence arrays for organisms of interest. Affymetrix has established partnerships and customer relationships with leading academic researchers, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, including Sysmex, F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., bioMerieux, Inc. and Veridex, LLC, a Johnson & Johnson company. In May 2007, Affymetrix celebrated the grand opening of its new manufacturing facility in Singapore. In January 2008, Affymetrix acquired USB Corporation, an Ohio-based developer of molecular biology and biochemical reagent products.
