GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES
BASF is a chemical manufacturing company that operates production facilities in 38 countries, owns 159 subsidiaries and serves customers in more than 170 countries. Around 22% of BASF sales are made to North American industries. BASF operates in five business segments: chemicals; plastics; performance products; agricultural products and nutrition; and oil and gas. The chemicals segment manufactures over 1,500 inorganic, petrochemical and intermediate chemicals for the pharmaceutical, construction, textile and automotive industries. The plastics segment primarily manufactures polystyrene, styrenics and performance polymers for the manufacturing and packaging industries. The performance polymers segment produces pigments, inks, printing supplies, coatings and polymers for the automotive, coatings, oil, paper, packaging, textile, leather, detergent, sanitary care, construction and chemical industries. The firm's agricultural and nutritional products segment produces and markets genetically engineered plants, nutritional supplements, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides for use in agriculture, public health and pest control. Lastly, the oil and gas segment is operated through the BASF subsidiary, Wintershall AG, which focuses on petroleum and natural gas exploration and production in North America, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. BASF also employs chemical nanotechnology in pigments that are used to color coatings, paints and plastics; aqueous polymer dispersions; and sunscreen. BASF is currently investing over $244 million in the research and development of nanostructured materials, nanostructured surfaces and nanoparticles in hopes of developing nanoporous foams with greater insulating properties and nanocubes as storage mediums for large amounts of gases. BASF discontinued its lysine business in 2007 and shut down its production facility in Gunsan, South Korea. In April 2007, BASF signed an agreement to sell its subsidiary, Cehmische Fabrik WIBARCO GmBH to Hansa Chemie International in Zurich, Switzerland. BASF is one of the world's leading R&D firms, with 8,000 employees working in research in 70 sites worldwide, employing a research budget of $1.3 billion Euros yearly.

BASF offers U.S. employees reimbursement accounts, tuition reimbursement, employee savings plans, adoption assistance and a preferred supplier discount.
