| | GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES | | Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) manufactures automobiles in 27 countries and regions throughout the world and sells them in more than 170 countries and regions under the Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu and Hino brands. In addition to its 12 plants in Japan, TMC has 52 manufacturing companies in other nations, which produce Lexus and Toyota vehicles and components. Toyota Financial Services Corporation (TFS), part of the non-automotive division of the firm, provides auto loans and leases for 5.4 million customers. In 2006, the firm reported selling more vehicles in the U.S. than in Japan for the first time in history. Toyota later announced plans to consider building as many as five North American assembly plants in the next 10 years. Also in 2006, the firm unveiled its flagship LS460 in the Japanese market, developed with a V8 engine and enhanced safety system by Lexus engineers. Toyota plans to increase production of the Toyota Prius, a hybrid vehicle, by 50%. In other news, the firm dissolved its wholly owned subsidiary Toyota Motor Asia Pacific Co., Ltd, a Thailand-based operation. The company also announced the pending availability of a drunk driving detection system, which would shut a vehicle down if it detected levels of alcohol in the driver's bloodstream. The firm planned to manufacture 9.34 million vehicles in fiscal 2007 and to increase production to 9.8 million for 2008. Toyota invests very heavily in research and development. The company expects to hire 8,000 engineers from 2007 through 2011 to handle increased design and production needs. Toyota's biggest push in the North American market is the completely redesigned Tundra full-size pickup, designed to compete head-on with Ford and Chevy trucks. |
