| | GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES | Abbott Laboratories' principal business is to discover, develop, manufacture and sell health care products and technologies ranging from pharmaceuticals, animal health products and medical devices. The pharmaceutical segment deals with adult and pediatric conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, HIV, epilepsy and manic depression. The diagnostics segment deals with molecular diagnostics and diabetes care through glucose monitoring, while vascular devices target vessel closure using StarClose. Spinal implants for back problems include PathFinder. The company operates in and outside the U.S., in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin and South America and the Middle East, marketing its products worldwide. Abbott’s 50% shares in TAP Pharmaceutical Products, which makes the prostate cancer drug, Lupron, and Prevacid (Ogastro), a proton pump inhibitor for the short-term treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, gives it an edge. Abbott initiated the first complete blood glucose monitoring system designed for diabetic cats and dogs. In agreement with Boston Scientific, it acquired Guidant’s vascular intervention and endovascular businesses. The company further acquired Kos Pharmaceuticals in 2006 through which it develops and commercializes hepatitis C virus protease inhibitors. It further received worldwide rights to market and distribute the Verax Platelet Test, used to detect the presence of a broad range of bacterial contaminants in platelets just prior to transfusion. In 2007, Abbott announced its intention to sell its core laboratory diagnostics business included in the Abbott Diagnostics Division and Abbott Point of Call to GE for $8.13 billion. Abbott promotes employee diversity and supports working mothers. It offers internships and professional development programs for employees at all levels. Forms of compensation extend to savings and pension plans and profit sharing. Other benefits include child and elder care, wellness programs, health and dental insurance and tuition reimbursement. |
