| | GROWTH PLANS/SPECIAL FEATURES | | Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation (Polo) is a leader in the design, marketing and distribution of premium lifestyle products. Over the past 30 years, the firm has expanded its line of clothing, accessories, fragrances and home furnishings into worldwide markets. Polo licenses the manufacturing of its products to companies worldwide. Capitalizing on the creative force of its founder, Ralph Lauren, the firm's various brand names have become recognizable cultural symbols across the globe. The firm offers four categories of lifestyle products: Apparel products, including extensive collections of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing; home products, including bedding and bath products, furniture, fabric, wallpaper, paints, tabletop and giftware; accessories such as footwear, eyewear, jewelry, leather goods, handbags and luggage; and fragrance products, consisting of fragrances and skin care products and sold under the Glamorous, Romance, Polo, Lauren, Safari, Blue Label, Black Label, and Polo Sport brands, among others. The company markets its products through department, specialty, golf and Polo Ralph Lauren stores, as well as via the Internet and mail order catalogs. It currently operates 147 full price stores including Ralph Lauren, Caban and Rugby stores; and 10,600 shop-within-shops. The company formed Ralph Lauren Media in a joint venture with NBC in order to reach consumers through various media outlets, including the Internet, television, cable and print. Its first initiative was the creation of Polo.com, a web site that brings products and information to consumers in an online magazine format. Polo recently acquired Sun Apparel, Inc., the company’s licensee for Polo Jeans, for $260 million. In 2006, the company closed all five Club Monaco factory outlet stores and all eight Club Monaco’s Caban Concept stores. In April 2007, the firm acquired a Japanese licensee for $345 million, as part of a strategy to expand its presence in Japan’s competitive market for luxury goods. |
